DAKTARI's volunteering program is designed to give our volunteers the opportunity to teach local children, care for injured or abandoned wildlife, and get fully immersed in the South African bush. As teachers and caretakers at DAKTARI, our volunteers are vital to the success of our programs and really make an impact on the communities.
GOOD TO KNOW
Volunteer's accommodation is included. DAKTARI has 4 main chalets for volunteers, each one offering a capacity of 3 to 5 single beds and equipped with one bathroom including a toilet, a sink and a shower with hot and cold water except for chalet 2 and the cabins. You will be provided with sheets, blankets and mosquito net.
Everyone is served three meals included per day by our experienced kitchen staff. On weekends there is usually only one lady working in the kitchen and you will be asked by the volunteer coordinator to help out. If you have any special requirements, e.g. vegetarian, vegan, kosher, halal or intolerance to certain foods, please speak to your volunteer coordinator or office manager.
The normal working hours are from Monday to Friday. You will start around 7 am till 8:30 pm. You will have a 2 hours lunch break and quiet time throughout the day. The lessons begin at 9 am and are finished around 4:30 pm and then we have group talks with the kids about social issues. Saturday and Sunday are volunteer's day off.
DAKTARI charges you a minimum fee of $460 GBP per 1 week, $660 GBP per 2 weeks, $960 GBP per 3 weeks, $1190 GBP per 4 weeks, $1690 GBP per 6 weeks, $2290 GBP per 8 weeks, $3390 GBP per 12 weeks. You also will be asked to pay a My Proext's administration fee when you are doing your application.
Field volunteers will be provided with stimulating practical experience in the following activities/areas:
- TEACHING THE CHILDREN:
You will be teaching a group of eight children, ages 13-16, about the environment, the importance of protecting wildlife, and about social issues like safe sex and substance abuse. All classes are taught in English but you do not need to be a native English speaker to teach at DAKTARI. You also don't need to have any teaching experience. We have everything you need to be a great teacher and we are happy to help you if you need it! Don't worry, we do make time for fun too! You will play games with the children, join them in the pool, and dance around the bonfire to their favorite songs. You also work with the kids to feed and care for the animals at DAKTARI.
- WORKING WITH THE ANIMALS:
The animals at DAKTARI are the cornerstone for the education program. Sadly, many of them are not able to be released but we are able to give them a second life at DAKTARI where they make a big impact. Many of the children who visit us have never seen the local wildlife, but here they get to see these animals for themselves. Each day you will help with the different chores that need to be done to keep our animals happy and healthy such as cleaning each enclosure and feeding them. Many of the animals that come to DAKTARI are injured or require special care (especially the babies!). That means that you may be tasked with providing medicine, first aid, or additional feeding to animals at the camp, day or night. If we have any new arrivals or animal releases, you will also have the opportunity to renovate or build new animal enclosures with our staff!
- ECO-CLUBS AND COMMUNITY PROJECTS:
Volunteers have many opportunities to get involved with the local communities around. Each week, DAKTARI's hosts two Eco-Clubs at the local schools that children can voluntarily attend to learn about a variety of topics as well as take part in community improvement projects. Our volunteers can join DAKTARI's outreach manager each week to help host the Eco-Club. We also will have everyone participate in community improvement projects, such as litter clean-up or setting up a dustbin in town for rubbish. You can also sign up for a home stay in which you and up to one other person can spend the night with one of our local families to see what it's like to live in an African village. Be prepared to get up early to help out!
This service generates NO FEE for the My Proext's members. We are always looking for help with activities and services and many of them can be done remotely. If you have a particular skill that you can use to help DAKTARI, please don't hesitate to fill the micro-volunteers application form. We seek micro-volunteers for the following activities:
