Those interested in volunteering at Lifting Hands must be committed to giving their best; you must have a passion and desire to share your expertise and knowledge and must be willing to contribute with a minimum of one hour a week.
GOOD TO KNOW
Lifting Hands does not offer room and board. It is recommended that volunteers find accommodations on their own (I.E. Airbnb) and to stay close to the project.
Meals are not included in the volunteer program. In any case, the volunteers are free to have their own meals, for approximately $12 USD per day. They have a kitchen where volunteers can cook their meals with no additional cost. The Costa Rican food is known for being quite tasty and tender.
The work weeks for the volunteers are usually from Monday to Fridays. Our schedules are: 2:30pm - 7pm (Monday through Thursday), 2:30pm - 5:30pm (Fridays). It is expected that volunteers organize themselves. If they do so will have all the weekend free.
Lifting Hands charges you $100 USD per month. Volunteers must cover all of their own living expenses (meals, accommodation, and transportation). You also will be asked to pay a My Proext's administration fee when you are doing your application.
Field volunteers will be provided with stimulating practical experience in the following activities/areas:
- ACTIVE VOLUNTEER:
This type of volunteer is expected to complete at least one hour a week. They help the project with the day a day work. The volunteer can choose different activities such as: Playing with the children; Helping the Administrator of the second-hand store; Giving language classes; Tutorials; Giving Math classes; Programming (it depends on the expertise of the volunteer). It will be a unique experience for volunteers where they can develop new skills, know a different culture and, above all, collaborate to build a better world.
This volunteer work involves teaching sports, tutoring or doing workshops among other activities. Classes are one hour long and workshops range from one hour to two hours. Everything is held at the Lifting Hands Center located at the Bajo de Los Anonos Community in Escazú. Each volunteer must prepare their class beforehand and may use the Lifting Hands material. If they are giving academic classes they must base their lessons on the Ministry of Education guidelines, especially if the students are seeking to pass their exams. Although each volunteer must always abide by the Center's guidelines, he or she is free to choose the methodology and speed at which to go, as this can be subject to the group they are working with. At the end of each quarter, students are awarded an educational or recreational field trip activity where volunteers can learn more about their students and have some time to share, play and reflect on what they have learned. Schedules are re-organized every four months, as the availability and incorporation of volunteers usually vary with time.
- COMMUNITY SERVICE:
This is an exclusive opportunity for students (high school or college) who must complete their community service hours. It is normally finished upon completing 150 hours of voluntary cooperation.
This service generates NO FEE for the My Proext's members. We are always looking for help with activities and services and many of them can be done remotely. If you have a particular skill that you can use to help Lifting Hands, please don't hesitate to fill the micro-volunteers application form. We seek micro-volunteers for the following activities:
