ACCOMMODATION

Volunteer's accommodation is included. Mahelerecen has rooms to accommodate the volunteers. The organization provides the free accommodation for 2 volunteers.

MEALS

Volunteers can prepare food for themselves, buying their own food in one of the markets available in Madurai city. If you don't like to cook, don't worry. It is possible to appoint the cook for prepare the food, but volunteers need to pay for that. Much of the food in India use ingredients like rice, curry, chicken, and vegetables.

SCHEDULE

It depends up on the program for the week but usually, we work from Monday to Friday morning 9.30 am to 5. pm which includes the office work, field visit, etc. If you went to mobile medical camps the work day will be a little bit longer. On Saturday we do meetings, reports preparation, conduct the school programs and other office works. Sunday is the day off and the volunteers are free to do what they want.

FEES

Mahelerecen charges you a fee of $50 USD for the application and $500 USD for your stay, arrival and internet expenses, at the time of your arrival. You also will be asked to pay a My Proext's administration fee when you are doing your application.

 

ACTIVITIES

Field volunteers will be provided with stimulating practical experience in the following activities/areas:

  • HEALTH CENTRE:

From 2015 Mahelerecen works at Chelliya Nagar, Madurai. Leprosy patients come here every day for treatment in this center. We are providing the free medical support to all our leprosy beneficiaries. Monthly special camps will be conducted for leprosy-affected.

  • SCHOOL PROGRAMME:

Our organization conducts the health awareness program to the school children living in rural India. Our team members going to every school located in different parts of Madurai district and conduct the awareness programs about health and communicable diseases like Leprosy, Malaria, HIV/AIDS etc. Volunteers can join and teach the school children.

  • MOBILE MEDICAL CAMP:

Monthly, one of our medical team members will go to the 5 block villages to treat leprosy-affected people. The importance of this service is that some leprosy-affected persons are not able to travel and their health conditions are not suitable to travel.

  • SOCIAL ECONOMIC REHAB:

We are conducting a Community-Based Rehabilitation since 1999. We have also given loan for their self-employment. Purchase of cow, goats, bullock cart, the tea shop, petty shop, flower and shamiana business, preparation of appalam and mud pot, vessel and bangle shop etc. Through this rehabilitation program, volunteers learn the economic position of poor India and act to which way to help them.

  • ELDERLY SELF HELP GROUP :

We are forming the Elder people Self Help Group for to raise their savings ability and for their future in the rural areas of Madurai district.

micro volunteering

This service generates NO FEE for the My Proext's members. We are always looking for help with activities and services and many of them can be done remotely. If you have a particular skill that you can use to help Mahelerecen, please don't hesitate to fill the micro-volunteers application form. We seek micro-volunteers for the following activities:

  • REVIEWER: Review the text of the magazine and look for spelling/grammar mistakes.
  • TRANSLATOR (ENGLISH TO SPANISH): Translate the contents of the magazine from English to Spanish.
  • TRANSLATOR (ENGLISH TO PORTUGUESE): Translate the contents of the magazine from English to Portuguese.
  • DESIGNER FOR COREL DRAW: Help with changes to be made in the magazine.
  • OTHERS: Some other online activity you would like to support.
