GOOD TO KNOW

icone accommodation

ACCOMMODATION

The accommodation consists of shared rooms with up to three people, beds, blankets and pillows. They also have bathrooms, cold water with the possibility of heating. The accommodation counts with solar energy only from 6 pm to 0 am. For days off and when the volunteer stays in the city of Iquique, we have partner hostels in which the volunteers will be in shared rooms. All accommodation is included in MasAgua’s fee.

MEALS

Meals are included in MasAgua’s fee too, but just for the work days. We just need to know previously if the volunteer is vegetarian or vegan. It’s because the meals are prepared by the “comuneros” and are typical meals: that means they include meat in their basic food. In the case of veggies and vegans volunteers, we adapted the meals.

icone schedule

SCHEDULE

We work on the project between Mondays and Fridays. Usually, the Mondays are an adapt day because of the altitude. The work time is usually from 9 am to 6 pm, and may vary according to the time of year and climatic conditions of the day. Saturdays and Sundays are usually free.

FEES

MasAgua is part of an NGO and all our financial funds come through support funds, partnerships and donations. So, to be a volunteer with us we ask you to pay a symbolic fee of US$ 245,00 per week. MasAgua will use these fees for meals in the work days, transportation, accommodation and transfer. You also will be asked to pay a My Proext's administration fee when you are doing your application.

ACTIVITIES

field volunteering

Field volunteers will be provided with stimulating practical experience in the following activities/areas:

WATER CHANNELS:

The volunteer will help in the cleaning and maintenance of the water channels that supply the communities and irrigate the land, providing all food and sustaining the wildlife.

ALPACAS AND LLAMAS:

The “comuneros” who work on the project have llamas and alpacas, who need daily care and help with their herds, such as cleaning and feeding the animals.

FARMING:

As they are communities that produce their own food, they need help cleaning up the terraces, planting and harvesting usually potatoes, corn and quinoa.

ROASTED CORN:

The volunteer will help prepare one of the typical foods of the Andean peoples, which is “maíz tostado”.

CORRALS:

Corrals are important for livestock, where the sheep, llamas and alpacas are housed. these corrals are made of stone and it is an arduous but very interesting work, because it brings us closer to the Aymara culture, since they are the traditional forms of construction.

STRAW ROOFS:

With the support of our community members, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn how traditional straw roofs are made and help to repair the traditional ceilings.

ADOVE:

Adove is the ecological tile, which communities use to build their homes and spaces in general. The volunteer will put the hand of the mass (literally) since the tile is made of water.

HANDCRAFTS:

The volunteer will have the opportunity to learn how to help in the elaboration of Aymara crafts, like handbags, bracelets and key rings, which are sold at fairs, which help in the budget of these families.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

If the volunteer has any special skills and would like to support us with their knowledge, MasAgua and CNG are open to receive any kind of help! These works can be carried out even outside the Altiplanic region, as in the workshop of the organization and even with other projects carried out by CNG.
